Cognitive
Computing
1. Introduction: -
Cognitive
computing is the simulation of human thoughts processes in a computerized
model. Cognitive computing involves a self learning system that uses data
mining, pattern recognition and natural language processing to mimic the way
human brain works and helps to improve decision-making. Cognitive computing systems learn and
interact naturally with people to extend what either humans or machine could do
on their own. They help human experts make better decisions by penetrating the
complexity of Big Data.
Cognitive
also describe the platform that broadly speaking on the scientific discipline
of artificial intelligence and signal processing. These platform encompasses
machine learning, reasoning, natural processing, speech and vision,
human-computer, dialog and narrative generation.
This
cognitive computing works by having more focused goal towards making more
accurate model of how human brain senses, reason and responds to stimulus.
Some features that cognitive systems may
express are:
·
Adaptive: - They
may learn as information changes and as goals and requirements evolve. They may
resolve ambiguity and tolerate unpredictability. They may be engineered to feed
on dynamic data in real time, or near real time.
·
Interactive: - They may interact easily with users so that those users can
define their needs comfortably. They may also interact with other processors,
devices, and Cloud services, as well as with people.
·
Iterative and stateful: - They may aid in
defining a problem by asking questions or finding additional source input if a
problem statement is ambiguous or incomplete. They may “remember” previous
interactions in a process and return information that is suitable for the
specific application at that point in time.
·
Contextual: -They may understand, identify, and extract
contextual elements such as meaning, syntax, time, location,
appropriate domain, regulations, user’s profile, process, task and goal. They
may draw on multiple sources of information, including both structured and
unstructured digital information, as well as sensory inputs (visual,
gestural, auditory, or sensor-provided).
2. Challenges
Faced by the oil and gas Industries: -
1.
Oil
and gas companies are not able to fully utilize available data for innovation
because of poor quality, inconsistency across data bases and incompleteness
2.
Oil
and gas companies struggle to maintain the right pool of talent due to the
highly technical and complex nature of job, ageing workforce, downsizing and
safety concerns
3.
Oil
and gas companies demanding new skills areas such as data scientists,
geologists etc.
4.
Oil
and gas companies lack advanced analytical tools and technologies that can
guide them on critical decisions such as acquisitions and selection of major
capital project investments
5.
Oil
and companies maintain huge volumes of business and technical data but
constrains of traditional systems, human capabilities, and poor quality of data
do not allow the full value of the information to be exploited.
3.Limitations
in Human and Machine: -
|
HUMANS
|
MACHINE
|
|
Human brain can consume and process
only limited amount of information
|
Traditional
technology cannot handle ambiguity.
|
|
Human
brain can consume and process only limited amount of information
|
Traditional
paradigm of computing is pre-programmed and rigid; it cannot learn, reason,
or relate
|
|
Human
workers and experts can make mistakes and have biases
|
Machines
do not interact in natural language.

4.How Cognitive Computing can enhance human performance?
1.
Enhance: - Enhances
the cognitive process of professionals to strengthen decision making in the
moment.
2.
Scale: - Scales expertise by elevating the
consistency and objectivity of decision making across an organization.
3.
Accelerate: - Captures the expertise of the top
performance and accelerates the development of expertise in others.
5.How
Cognitive computing can help the industry to transform.
